- by Sarah H. Crampton Nancy Davidson's paintings are crafted with an expressive freshness and sparkle. To enhance the impact of her images, her spirited choice of background color often amplifies the subject in the foreground. In her painting Andalusian Dance, the red behind the gray prancing horse kindles his energy, capturing the excitement on canvas while the warm blue and gold behind the horse in the painting Red Halter instills kindness and dignity. Davidson states, "I want my paintings to be like horses - big, strong, and full of energy. I love to paint large with bold colors, thus giving a contemporary look to a very traditional image. I strive for that same feeling even when working on a smaller scale or in pencil." Born in Santa Barbara, California, Nancy Davidson was influenced at an early age by her grandparents' Ed Borein etchings. Given her love of horses, it was a natural for her to want to draw and paint them. Davidson explains, "Although I am interested in anatomical accuracy, I am more interested in manipulating colors to elicit a strong emotional response. I strive to make my paintings as intense as dreams or visions. I want to create an inner reality beyond the outer reality. I want the viewer to not only see the horse, but actually feel his presence." Davidson feels the horse represents not only physical power, but unearthly power. They are often the symbolic vehicle for a person's spiritual quest. This quest can be a lifelong journey. She remarks, "Horses are an absolute delight for artists. Combining large, powerful shapes with delicate, refined lines, they provide beautiful contrasts of form and exciting visual rhythm." Her confident use of bold colors, half tones, shadows, and her interesting sense of the source of light give her paintings a serene luminous glow. An eye-pleasing collection of paintings empowered with vitality reward Nancy Davidson's artistic efforts. Nancy Davidson will be exhibiting at the Peppertree Art Show, Santa Yenz, California, November 8-9, 2003, www.peppertreeartshow.com and the Strathearn Western Art Show in October that will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. |
