The horse, to which I have such a powerful emotional connection as well as intimate knowledge, is the ideal subject for creative expression through fine art photography. A standard snapshot is a photographic record of the existence of a particular animal. The fine art portrait photograph endeavors to go beyond this. It attempts to reach beneath the skin and sinew to capture an image that portrays the essence of the animal’s soul through the beautiful expression of his form.

Beyond portraiture, the camera can present my creative ideas to the viewer. By sharing my images I hope to connect with the observer’s dreams, fantasies or ideals. Sometimes, capturing a transitory moment elicits an emotional response. A particular image may evoke a special feeling, a remembrance that others connected to horses may share, or an experience, joy, or sense of peace.

No subject portrays the attributes of dignity and courage better than the horse, and they teach us to be the same if we open ourselves to listen.

About the Artist After thirty years as a trainer and instructor, Debby Thomas began a second life creating art and photography. It was a natural progression to use the horse as her favorite art subject. Debby Thomas’ artwork may be seen at The Complete Horse and Myrna’s in the Richmond area of Virginia, All The King’s Horses Gallery in Leesburg, Virginia, and her web site www.AnimalArtAndPhotography.com
