Barbaro Sculpture Unveiled

A week before the running of the 2009 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Kentucky, a 1,500-pound bronze memorial sculpture of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was unveiled. Barbaro died in 2007 after a struggle to survive a hind leg injury he incurred at the Preakness Stakes.

The sculpture was created by sculptor Alexa King and depicts Barbaro galloping down the track, all four feet off the ground with jockey Edgar Prado aboard. The statue, which has Barbaro’s ashes in the base, is placed outside a gate at the track so the public can visit him at any time.
