AAEA Presents Pulling their Weight Exhibit

Mackinac Island is a horse lover’s paradise with these marvelous animals everywhere you look. On July 1-31 there will be even more to view, as The American Academy of Equine Art’s exhibit Pulling their Weight-Draft and Carriage Horses in Fine Art will be on display at the Mackinac Public Library from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. The show and sale will consist of approximately two-and three-dimensional pieces by academy members and guest artists. The opening reception will be Sunday, July 1, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

With regard to the island’s thriving horse culture, it likely has the most draft equines working in one place in the world. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours has over 100 carriages and 400 horses, and offers various services including sightseeing tours, wedding carriages and winter sleigh rides, just to name a few. Becky Barnwell, executive director of the Mackinac Island Arts Council notes: “We feel it is time to bring a show of this caliber to the island and are pleased to partner with the academy to do it. We invite all our residents and visitors to stop by and see the fabulous art.”

AAEA president, Lloyd Kelly says: “Mackinac Island is a unique trip back in time, since the local economy still depends on horses to thrive. The renewed interest in the driving discipline in general and how draft horses fit into that interests our artists, with many choosing to depict the animals at work in typical surroundings. This is our first show dedicated to the driving discipline, and we feel it is apropos to have it at Mackinac Island.”
