Cover artist Jennifer Marshall grew up in the outback where she developed a
deep love and appreciation for the Australian bush. From very early on, her
love of horses inspired her to study and draw them, developing her ability
to observe. She also broadened her vision by painting portraits and studies
of flowers. A fascination with Australia's unique history combined with her
love of horses, the country way of life and the Australian bush are cojoined
in her paintings. Marshall's formal education began in a little school at
Upper Burringbar in New South Wales. It was here Jennifer sold her first
drawings and watercolors. She excelled in art at Murwillumbah High School
and was among the top ten art students in the New South Wales Higher School
Certificate. With art as her major focus, she completed her diploma in
education in general primary teaching at Northern Rivers College of Advanced
Education. Shortly after, she began exhibiting and selling her acrylic
paintings and continued to do so in the country regions of Central New South
Wales, and later in the Mackay region and Warwick in Queensland.
Storm The uphill cantering Arabian horse has a powerful presence as he
leaps and cavorts toward the viewer. Like the title, Storm, there is an
unpredictable nature to this spirited horse. With tail flying wešre not
sure what the lively Arab will do next. He is full of confidence and demands
our attention. Jennifer Marshall creates a compelling painting heightened by
the black background. |
Jennifer painted in acrylics until she discovered pastels in 1985, and
watercolors in 1994. Recently has used alkyds and oils. In 1993 she was
accepted as a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of Australia and as
tutor of pastel classes for the Mackay Campus of James Cook University.
In 2006, Jennifer Marshall and her husband Ron moved to Warwick in southern
Queensland. She is involved in the local art community, tutoring drawing and
teaching pastel classes at the Warwick Artists Group. Ron Marshall is a
fellow artist who has similar interests. Jennifer remarks, "We are in the
delightful position of being able to work together on our painting projects,
sharing our passion for Australian horses, history and nature, and explore
techniques to better express this in our paintings."
