Artist Bits: Susan F. Farnell
She is self-taught in the art of drawing horses, her preference being pencil or pen and ink. Now she turns her pictures into stained glass patterns. When she wasnšt riding her horse, she was drawing pictures of horses she had seen at shows or rodeos, or just in her own imagination. She knew that God had given her this talent for a reason, and always felt that she was being challenged to take it one step farther. One day she saw an ad in the newspaper for stained glass classes and signed up. Her first two projects were small suncatchers, which were required for the course. Then she took a leap of faith when someone asked her if she could do a portrait of their own horse. The results were more than she ever imagined. She feels that if youšre really in tune with your subject, close your eyes and pretend you are caressing that subject. If the subject is equine, she feels it is so much easier to know where the bone structure is going, the fold of the nostrils, the angle of the jaw line, and so on. Susan also does commissioned custom work with equines, canines, felines, as well as scenes of the Southwest. Susan Farnell can be reached at: moccasinmoon@windstream.net |
